April 11 CDC Membership Meeting
Come join your fellow Howard County Democrats in attending Wednesday's Columbia Democratic Club (CDC) meeting to be held at Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center, 6030 Tamar Drive in Columbia. Following an informal reception and CDC business meeting beginning at 7:00 p.m., the monthly CDC program, starting at 8:00 p.m., will feature presentations by special guest Dr. Peter Beilenson, Howard County's new Health Officer, and our own Glenn Schneider with Health Care for All. Come hear their remarks and receive answers to your questions, and plan to attend this intended informative and interactive evening on county health care issues.
Below is an excerpt from Howard County regarding Dr. Beilenson's recent appointment as the County's Health Officer.
Dr. Beilenson is a well known name in both the Maryland and national public health communities. In 1992, Beilenson was appointed Commissioner of Health for Baltimore City by Mayor Kurt Schmoke and reappointed by Mayor Martin O'Malley in January 2000. In his capacity as Health Commissioner he was the local public health authority for the City, oversaw 1,200 employees and managed a $225 million budget. As Commissioner, Dr. Beilenson expanded drug treatment programs in Baltimore, improved immunization compliance, initiated a wide range of lead poisoning prevention initiatives, took on juvenile violence prevention, and founded and chaired the state-wide initiative for universal health coverage in Maryland. Beilenson has received many national and local awards for his innovative health policies including: the first-ever recipient of the Milton and Ruth Roemer Award for creativity by a local health official, the American Lung Association of Maryland’s President’s Award, and the Child Advocate of the Year by CASA of Maryland.
